Reading Dragons

Welcome to Reading Dragons, the Okotoks Public Library's thrilling new reading incentive program for kids ages 6 to 12!

Dive into a world of adventure where your reading powers help you grow mighty dragons. From September to May for every 30 minutes you spend reading, come to the library to collect a dragon card. Each month, you'll have the chance to nurture four different dragons, guiding them from an egg to a baby, then a teen, and finally into a full-fledged dragon! With 16 unique cards to collect every month, the more you read, the more dragons you’ll grow. Join the quest and see how many dragons you can raise!

The Reading Dragons program is generously supported by:

Reading Dragons is for children ages 6 to 12.

Come to the library during open hours and pick up your Reading Dragons welcome package and reading tracker at the Children's Library. Each welcome package includes:

  • Magical Reading Dragons collectible bag
  • Bookmark
  • Three dragon starter cards.
  • Dragon card checklist with sleeve

Reading Dragons launches Tuesday, September 3, 2024 and runs until May 31, 2025.

  • Start Your Adventure:
    • For every 30 minutes you read, visit the library to collect a dragon card. Track your reading minutes using your Reading Tracker.
    • Each month, four unique dragons are available, the more you read, the more you collect.
  • Grow Your Dragon:
    • Begin by choosing an Egg card for one of the dragons. Once you've collected an egg, continue reading to grow your dragon.
    • After the egg stage, you can collect the Baby card for the same dragon, then the Teen card, and finally, the Adult card.
  • Collect in Any Order:
    • You have the option to collect cards in any order you like. You can collect all four Egg cards first, then move on to the Baby stage, followed by Teen, and finally, Adult.
    • However, remember that you cannot collect a Baby card until you have the matching Egg, and you cannot collect a Teen card until you have the matching Baby, and so on.
  • Track Your Progress:
    • As you collect cards, keep track of your progress and watch your dragons grow. With 16 cards available each month, you can raise multiple dragons to their full potential.
  • Keep Reading:
    • The more you read, the more dragons you can grow and collect! Keep coming back to the library to see how many dragons you can nurture each month.

We can’t replace lost cards but no worries! Just keep reading and earning new cards.

Yes! If you join the program late, don’t stress! You can work backwards by filling in squares from previous months on your reading tracker – cards (besides the limited edition cards) are not exclusive.

There are five limited edition one-shot cards that you can earn by coming to the library on the following dates and times:

Collect them all! Your Reading Tracker has a checklist to help you keep track of all of the available cards for Year One.

Once you’ve collected enough cards, you can start to play fun card games with them — Rock, Paper, Scissors and Dragon Duel.

Card Games

Once you've started collecting cards you're ready to start playing with them!

Rock, Paper, Scissors

You and a friend each choose one card secretly, keeping it hidden so your friend can’t see what you chose. Then count to 3 and both of you flip over your cards to see who wins.

  • Red beats Green
  • Green beats Blue
  • Blue beats Red

Dragon Duel

Play this game when you have several dragons cards (be sure to write your name on the cards so you don’t get them mixed up with your opponent’s).

  1. Mix up both player’s cards and divide them evenly between both players.
  2. Place your stack of cards face down on the table. Do not look at your cards.
  3. Both players draw the top card on their deck and flip it over at the same time.
    • Red beats Green
    • Green beats Blue
    • Blue beats Red

If you have the same color, the oldest creature wins. (The three starter cards count as an “adult” card for scoring during dragon duel.)

If your creatures are the same age then it’s time to duel:

  1. To duel, add two face down cards to the pile, then play one more card face up.
    • Red beats Green
    • Green beats Blue
    • Blue beats Red

     2. If you have the same color, the oldest creature wins.
     3. If you tie again, duel until there is a winner.

The winner adds both cards to their win pile.
Play until you run out of cards.
The player with the most cards in their win pile wins!
